Lower Zambezi National Park

The newest of Zambia`s parks, Lower Zambezi is a park in a true wilderness state, due to the lack of infrastructure. It lies downstream from Lake Kariba and opposite Zimbabwe`s Mana Pools National Park, creating an immense home for the migrating animals.

Following the mighty Zambezi River as it opens onto floodplains, the 4100 square kilometer park rests mainly in the river valley, an attraction to many varieties of wildlife.

Animals & Birds

Lower Zambezi National Park is home to enormous herds of elephant, crocodile, lion, leopard, hippo, antelope buffalo and waterbuck are all found in generous numbers. The bird life is wondrous, and includes the enormous shoebill storks.

Most lodges offer fishing on the Zambezi river with common catches being tiger fish, bream and vundu weighing up to 40 kilos. Tourism Zambia recommends soap as a very good bait...but if you want your grandchildren to be able to enjoy this as well, I would suggest and alternative.

Notable Facts

Most lodges offer canoe trips - a definite must for great game viewing.

Lower Zambezi was declared a notional park in 1983, prior to this it was private game reserve of Zambia's president. This, and the lack of good roads, keeps the tourism numbers down to those with a true adventurers spirit and, to those, it offers a pristine and uncrowded setting for game viewing.
