South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa, at over 9,000 sq km's, is in this writers opinion, one of the "must see" parks in Zambia. With a huge density of wildlife and a more remote location, you get the animal viewing opportunities - without the crowds.

Both North Luangwa and South Luangwa lie between the western bank of the Luangwa River and the striking Muchinga escarpment, and share much of the same ecosystems.

Animals & Birds

Just some of the adjectives used to describe South Luangwa's animals are "immense", "dazzling", "world renowned". You can find hippos, crocodiles, elephants, giraffe, zebra, leopards, buffalo and several prides of lions. Antelope species are numerous including impala, puku, waterbucks and bushbucks.

Birds here include crowned cranes, purple crested loeries, broad billed roller, Lillian’s lovebird, the carmine bee-eater, giant eagle owl and Pel’s fishing owl.

Everyone seems to have a differing idea as to when the best time for birds is.
